Thought it was time for a main thread to discuss Nat's role on Underbelly.

There's some pics from the set here, and ACA did a report last night which you can watch here. It contains a bit of set footage, and they speak to Nat (though it's very short).

Gotta love that 80's 'Wonder Woman style' hair and lippy. The dress is really cute though.

She played bad girl Izzy in Neighbours, a tourist fleeing a serial killer in Prey and now Wollongong home-girl Natalie Bassingthwaighte is set to take on the role of a corrupt cop's wife in the third series of Underbelly, which will screen next year.

While Screentime and Network Nine were tight-lipped about Bassingthwaighte's role in Underbelly 3: The Golden Mile, the Mercury understands she has won the part of Jayne Haken, the adulterous and neglected wife of Trevor Haken.

The moustachioed Haken, played by Dieter Brummer in the second series of Underbelly, was a crooked detective who rolled over on 35 senior officers during the Wood Royal Commission into corruption in the police force in the 1990s.

After he turned informant and star witness at the commission his wife Jayne and their four children were forced into hiding and given new identities by the NSW Government.

The couple later divorced and Jayne lost all government support.

Sean Padraic's 2005 book, Sympathy for the Devil: Confessions of a Corrupt Police Officer, was written with Haken and in one chapter detailed how the Kings Cross detective sergeant's drinking and neglect led Jayne to begin an affair with another police officer, Jim Bignell.

Haken - dressed in disguise - later told ABC TV's Australian Story about his life and marriage.

"That relationship between my wife and the other detective made me realise that I'd taken my eye off the ball completely by excessive drinking ... I gave up drinking completely and tried as best I could to get our marriage back on track," he said.

"After that, it became a giant eye-opener to me how cheaply police were selling themselves to criminals or other people for a few beers or the price of a cheap meal."

Underbelly 3 will also follow the lives of prostitute turned policewoman Kim Hollingsworth, Kings Cross bar baron John Ibrahim, the Bayeh brothers and corrupt cop, Chook Fowler, who was famously caught on a hidden camera in Haken's car accepting dirty money.

Heard about this on Sunrise last week. Don't know why Seven where banging on about a Nine program other than to try and stick it up them.

Ex-female cop threat to Underbelly
By Lisa Davies, Chief Court Reporter From: The Daily Telegraph
March 03, 2010 4:29PM

THE much-anticipated third Underbelly series is under threat from a star of the real-life version - an ex-cop who claims she is defamed in the show by being intimately linked with Kings Cross identity John Ibrahim.

Former Constable Wendy Hatfield has launched defamation action in the Supreme Court, even though she hasn't seen the program, due to air later this month.

The former officer argues the TV series is based on the book - Underbelly: The Golden Mile - which defames her in chapter three by claiming Ms Hatfield "had a sexual relationship with John Ibrahim, knowing him to be a notorious criminal".

It also implies she is guilty of perjury, the court heard.

As a result, barrister Sue Chrysanthou is seeking access to five episodes of the Channel 9 series before it goes to air, with a plan to taking out an injunction if it is in fact as defamatory as they believe.

Ms Hatfield, who now lives in Victoria, has long been linked to Ibrahim, with the Wood Royal Commission in 1996 into police corruption hearing Mr Ibrahim confirm the pair knew each other. However, he declined to answer questions about the nature of their relationship, when asked.

Instead, he only confirmed in evidence to the Commission in 1995 that he had a two-month affair with Ms Hatfield, and that they had taken a mid week getaway to go out on a dive boat off Forster.

Ms Hatfield, who resigned from the force, denied at the Commission she had a sexual relationship with Mr Ibrahim but accepted she did go away with him on the dive boat.

In court today, Ms Chrysanthou said her client stood to have her reputation wholly destroyed if the series is aired to millions of Australians.

"She cannot come back from that, there's no amount of money in the world that can put her reputation back to where it should be," Ms Chrysanthou said.

Plenty of online material and other publications have confirmed the character of "Junior Constable Wendy" who is played by former Home and Away actress Jessica Tovey, who has confirmed in a biography that she appears in five episodes.

The actor who plays Ibrahim, Firass Dirani, has also reportedly said his "hardest scene" was when he got "hot and heavy with Constable Wendy".

However, a sworn affidavit by Ms Hatfield's solicitor includes the following denial: "I am further informed by the plaintiff that she has never had a sexual relationship with John Ibrahim."

Justice Ian Harrison is expected to hand his decision down on Friday week.

Should have a ruling on this Friday.
